The Crusaders have knocked the Red Knights out of the playoffs in each of the last two years, but on Thursday, Incarnate Word extracted some revenge by defeating St. Dominic, 8-0.
St. Dominic had been on a hot streak, winning 18 out of its last 19 games. That streak included a 7-6 win over Incarnate Word on September 22.
"This is the first time we have gotten past St. Dominic (19-3) in the last three years,"  Incarnate Coach Andy Lodes said.  "We are just excited about [the win]."
Incarnate Word (18-7) wasted little time getting on the board.  Kim Kulaitis started off the game with a single, stole second, and scored when a Crusader throw to first scooted away from the first baseman.
Lodes added, "[Kim Kulaitis] did a great job."
That's all the support Lisa Battocletti would need.  She went the distance, allowing just two hits while walking two. She went one stretch retiring eight Crusaders in a row; as Lodes noted, "[Battocletti] did a really nice job, throwing a two-hitter at them."
Jeni Schellert and Shannon Neumann registered Crusader hits in the first two innings, but from there, Battocletti would only allow walks in the fourth and sixth.
"Abby Farrig's hit with two out in the second inning to take it from 1-0 to 2-0 was real big," Lodes said.
Kim Kulaitis struck again.  She started a rally in the top half of the third with a home run that "got down and got rolling." Jenny Mers had a bases

loaded single to make the game 4-0.  That was when Michelle Smith came up and belted a triple to right center.
"That pretty much iced it," Lodes said.
Smith scored on Abby Fahrig's groundout to short to end the scoring.
For Incarnate, eight of the nine starters had a hit, and as a team, they had 12 hits.
"I think we played a sharp, very good game today," Lodes said.  "I was real happy with our effort.  I had no complaints."
Lodes was impressed with his team's performance, and he told them they could do it again on Saturday, when the Red Knights will travel to Mexico and face Warrenton (19-7).  Warrenton defeated Fulton, 4-3, on Thursday.
Nicole Peters takes the loss for St. Dominic.  She ends her season with a highly impressive 14-2 record.
