Cor Jesu Celebrates Quarterfinal Win Over Parkway Central

The Cor Jesu Chargers had been a rather subdued bunch along the playoff trail.  No raucous celebrations or emotional displays--that is, until Monday's 2-0 quarterfinal win over Parkway Central at the Kirkwood Athletic Association.
"I know a lot of people have been asking us how come they haven't been excited when they won district, when they won sectional," said Cor Jesu coach Marianne Haberstroh.  "It's like they were holding off their excitement.  And I think if anybody was there today that saw it, they know that the girls really got excited when they made their goal, which was to make it to state."
The Chargers reached their goal in exciting fashion, scoring the game's only two runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Lauren Feltmann led off the inning with a single.  One out later, Holly Sahrmann hit a ball that eluded the Parkway Central outfielders, allowing Feltmann to score and Sahrman to wind up at third.  Catie Blume then hit a grounder back to Central pitcher, Lisa Schmalz, who checked the runner at third, faked a throw to first, and then threw wildly past third.  That allowed

Sahrman to cross the plate with the second Cor Jesu run.
The Colts made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh when they put runners at first and second with nobody out.  But Cor Jesu pitcher Melissa Vanvelkinburgh pitched out of the jam, sending the Chargers to state.
"These are the kind of ballgames you expect to have when you get to this stage," said Haberstroh.
The Chargers meet Eureka in the semifinals on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Rainbow Softball Complex in
Columbia.
