Lancers Keep Faith,
Go Back To State

The Lutheran South Lancers are headed to the state softball tournament  after pulling off a 5-4, eight-inning, come-from-behind win over Perryville in Monday's quarterfinal at the Kirkwood Athletic Association.
The Lancers and head coach Linda McQueen have lived by the theme, "Hold the rope," this season, a symbol of the togetherness they share.  McQueen believes that closeness and their deep faith carried them to victory.
"'Hold the rope' is a saying that we've had that each person is there for the other person," said McQueen.  "If someone makes an error, or if someone doesn't get it done, somebody else will be there to pick them up.  It goes back to our belief that Christ held the rope for us when we messed up."
The Lancers came to bat in the bottom of the seventh trailing, 4-2, but believing that they could pull off the comeback.  The Lancers promptly loaded the bases for Megan Gates,

who singled home two runs to tie it, and the game went into extra innings.     Perryville failed to score in the top of the eighth.  Lutheran South's Pam Younglove led off the bottom of the inning with a single and later came home to score the game-winner on Joy Puricelli's drive off the fence.
Lutheran South will make its second straight appearance at the state tournament.  The Lancers meet Incarnate Word in a Class 3A semifinal Friday at the Rainbow Softball Complex in Columbia.
