By Paul Kopsky
A year ago, the Chaminade Flyers were on top of the Missouri Class 4A prep baseball world after shutting out Metro Catholic Conference rival DeSmet, 5-0, in the state championship game.  But, as they say, "What a difference a year makes."
On Thursday, the Spartans of DeSmet avenged that difficult loss last year by shutting out the Flyers, 8-0, in a district championship game at Parkway Central.
The Spartans took charge early on Thursday, erupting for four runs in the second inning.
Bob Zimmermann put the Spartans on top to stay with a one-out RBI double that scored Jason Janisse.  After Mike Rempe reached on an error,  John McGrath singled home a run to make it 2-0.  Matt Marstall followed with a run-scoring double, and Brian Spinner capped off the rally with an RBI single to make it 4-0, DeSmet.

The Spartans tacked on three more insurance runs by putting together a two-out rally in the sixth.  Don Rogers'

Don Rogers pitched a complete game to lead the Spartans to an 8-0 victory and a district championship over Chaminade.  He also went 2-3 at the plate with two RBIs and was on base three times.

two-run single and Jason Janisse's RBI single were the key hits in the inning, and the Spartans' lead had ballooned to 8-0.
"They played a great game," Chaminade coach Rick Wibbenmeyer said of the Spartans.  "The pitched well, they hit well, they fielded well and they ran the bases well.  You have to give them a lot of credit."
Rogers pitched a complete game one-hitter and starred at the plate, going 2-3 with two RBI's.
