Eureka Clubs Northwest, 10-1, In District 2 Semifinal

By Curtis Duncan
During the 1999 baseball season, the Eureka Wildcats have been regarded as a light-hitting club.  That was during the regular season.  But the postseason began this week, and the stakes rose quickly; when the playoffs begin, the Wildcats' bats typically start rattling.  Eureka broke out the big bats on Wednesday, breaking loose for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 10-1 win over Suburban South rival Northwest House Springs in a Class 4A, District 2 semifinal at Eureka High.
The victory propels the Wildcats (12-8) into the district championship game at 4:15 p.m., Thursday, against Pacific at Eureka.  Northwest had its season stopped at 8-12.
"It was a good win for us," said Eureka coach Michael Hunt.  "We kind of missed some opportunities early, but we kept battling and finally got some big hits in the fifth inning there and put a big run on them."
Northwest grabbed the early lead with a run in the top of the second inning, as Chad Lembach homered, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead.
Eureka squandered a few chances to score in the early innings, but that all changed for the Wildcats in the bottom of the fifth.  Dan Moellering tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single to right field.  Just a few batters later, freshman Adam Grzyb singled home two more runs, making it 3-1 for the Wildcats.
Kevin Baker and Joel Patton also supplied big hits in the frame.  Baker

drove in a pair of runs with a double, and Patton stroked two hits in the inning.  By the end of the inning, the Wildcats had a comfortable 8-1 cushion.  Baker finished the day with two RBIs and a run scored.  Patton also drove in two runs.
Moellering was simply razor sharp on the mound for Eureka.  He struck out eight and walked none, throwing only 65 pitches to gain his fifth win of the year.
"[Moellering] pitched an excellent game," Hunt said.  "He threw 65 pitches in seven innings, so he was throwing strikes and getting ground balls and popups, and that's what we want."
Dave Klahs was saddled with the loss for Northwest-House Springs.
