Spitze Sparks Edwardsville

By Curtis Duncan
Edwardsville ran into a tough day on Tuesday at Belleville East, as Lancer pitchers Dante Brinkley and Brad Binder stymied the Tigers in a 7-2 victory.
Just a day later, the Tigers were back in action and took care of business against Francis Howell.
Leadoff hitter Todd Spitze went three for four at the plate, scoring two runs and sparking Edwardsville to a 9-2 win over the Vikings, Wednesday afternoon, at Edwardsville.
Edwardsville raised its mark to 12-3.  Francis Howell slipped to the .500 mark at 6-6.
"Francis Howell came out early and scored a couple of runs in the first couple of innings," said Edwardsville coach Tim Funkhouser.  "Then, I think our bats came alive, and we got some good two-out hits."
Spitze, a sophomore shortstop/outfielder, was the Tigers' catalyst on this day, scoring a pair of runs and driving in one, as well.
"Todd Spitze really did a great job at the leadoff position of getting the ball in play and picked up several hits today," said Funkhouser.
Howell got the early jump, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the third inning.
The Tigers responded quickly to the Howell rally with a three-run surge in the bottom of the third inning.
Brian Peterson singled, and then with two out, Peterson scored from second on a base hit by Spitze, making it 1-0.  Andrew Honegger reached on an error, and Spitze scored on a RBI single by Matt Bogle.  Honegger came home from third on a wild pitch, as Nick Seibert struck out swinging to end the frame with the Tigers in front, 3-2.  Bogle and Peterson were both solid at the plate with two hits and two RBIs each on the day.
Edwardsville added to the lead with two more in the bottom of the fourth.  Matt Turner was hit by a pitch to start the frame, and then with one out,

Travis Riggs crushed a two-run homer, extending the Tigers' edge to 5-2.
"Travis Riggs got a nice home run, and he really made some adjustments hitting and came through big for us," said Funkhouser.
A four-run sixth inning helped put the game comfortably out of reach for Edwardsville and gave the Tigers pitching plenty of breathing space.
Brett Zika picked up the win, going five strong innings for the Tigers. Zika allowed just one earned run before giving way to Ben Hosto and Jake Schuette.  Hosto and Schuette each worked an inning to finish the outing.
Kevin Sahrmann took the loss for Francis Howell.
At roughly the halfway point of the season, Edwardsville is adjusting nicely to life with Funkhouser, and despite a few recent bumps in the road, the Tigers should continue to be a tough date for opponents on their schedule.
"We're very comfortable with where we're at right now," said Funkhouser.  "We've dropped some games recently, but I'm very impressed with the way our kids compete on a daily basis, and we're going to continue to get better as team."
