By Curtis Duncan Edwardsville ran into a tough day on Tuesday at Belleville East, as Lancer pitchers Dante Brinkley and Brad Binder stymied the Tigers in a 7-2 victory. Just a day later, the Tigers were back in action and took care of business against Francis Howell. Leadoff hitter Todd Spitze went three for four at the plate, scoring two runs and sparking Edwardsville to a 9-2 win over the Vikings, Wednesday afternoon, at Edwardsville. Edwardsville raised its mark to 12-3. Francis Howell slipped to the .500 mark at 6-6. "Francis Howell came out early and scored a couple of runs in the first couple of innings," said Edwardsville coach Tim Funkhouser. "Then, I think our bats came alive, and we got some good two-out hits." Spitze, a sophomore shortstop/outfielder, was the Tigers' catalyst on this day, scoring a pair of runs and driving in one, as well. "Todd Spitze really did a great job at the leadoff position of getting the ball in play and picked up several hits today," said Funkhouser. Howell got the early jump, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. The Tigers responded quickly to the Howell rally with a three-run surge in the bottom of the third inning. Brian Peterson singled, and then with two out, Peterson scored from second on a base hit by Spitze, making it 1-0. Andrew Honegger reached on an error, and Spitze scored on a RBI single by Matt Bogle. Honegger came home from third on a wild pitch, as Nick Seibert struck out swinging to end the frame with the Tigers in front, 3-2. Bogle and Peterson were both solid at the plate with two hits and two RBIs each on the day. Edwardsville added to the lead with two more in the bottom of the fourth.
