Parkway West Finishes Off Fox In Six

By Curtis Duncan
After getting shelled by Suburban West and district rival Parkway Central, 12-4, on Monday, Parkway West was in desperate needed of a pick-me-up.  The Longhorns were grateful benefactors of just such a gift when their conference schedule presented them a date with Fox on Wednesday afternoon.  Fox took a quick 1-0 lead on the Longhorns, but West exploded for five runs in the top of the third inning and five in the top of the sixth inning, breezing to an 11-1 victory in six innings at Fox High School.
Parkway West, which had lost two of its last three, improved to 10-7 (5-3 in the Suburban West).  Fox dropped to 2-13 and remains winless in conference (0-10 in the conference).
"It was a good one; we needed it," said Parkway West coach Scott Weissman.  "We came off a disappointing loss the other day against [Parkway] Central, so this was one we needed to get."
Despite giving up a run in the bottom of the first, the Longhorns' bats came alive in the bottom of the third.  With runners at second and third, Troy Walker singled home a run, and Trevor Helms scored on a wild pitch, making it 2-1.
Bryan Brown and Ryan Shapiro later delivered run-scoring singles, and Keith Cronin drove in another run with bases loaded, as he was hit by a pitch, stretching the lead to 5-1.
West notched another run in the top of the fourth.
Dustin Larson reached on an error, stole second base, and scored on an RBI-single by Brown. Brown drove in three runs and scored twice on the day.
The Longhorns delivered the knockout punch in the top of the sixth with a five-run flurry.  Helms and Walker started the frame with back to back

singles.  After a double steal and an intentional walk to Brown, Davis singled home two runs to key the five-run sixth inning.  Davis had a big game with the bat, scoring twice and collecting three hits along with three RBIs.
Good situation hitting was a big help to Parkway West in helping its offense explode for 13 hits against Fox pitchers Bryan Zimmer and Chris Campbell.
"Well, we've been working on situation hitting, and that's what we had today," said Weissman. "We had runners in scoring position and got the hit [to] drive them in…Nobody was trying to hit the ball out of the ballpark, and we were fortunate to get big hits."
Sophomore pitcher Jamee Burrus provided West with a pitching lift, turning in a superb performance, allowing no earned runs for a victory in his varsity debut.
"It was his first varsity game, and he came up and did a real nice job," said Weissman.  "He threw strikes and kept the ball in the ballpark."
Zimmer took the loss for Fox.
