Pattonville Routs Hazelwood Central, 12-2

By Curtis Duncan
The Pattonville Pirates broke out the big bats early and often against Hazelwood Central on Thursday afternoon.  Despite falling behind in the first inning, Pattonville exploded for four runs in the first and six more in the fourth en route to a 12-2 victory in five innings over the Hawks in a Suburban North Conference game at Pattonville.
Pattonville extended its mark to 8-1 (6-1 in the conference) and, with the win, moves back into first place in the Suburban North race as McCluer knocked off Hazelwood West, 6-4, on Thursday.  Hazelwood Central fell to 7-3 (5-2 in the conference).
"They jumped on it with two in the first; we responded with four, and we really got a lot of timely hits and capitalized on some walks and hit batters," said Pattonville coach Mark Hahn. "We really swung the bats and, offensively, did a great job."
After not getting balanced hitting up and down the lineup in recent games, the Pirates struck for 11 hits against Hazelwood Central pitchers Justin Dawson and Kyle Hefele.
Nine different batters hit safely for the Pirates, as senior outfielder/pitcher Pat Govro and Gabe Lindsey led the bat brigade with two hits each.  Govro also tripled and drove in three runs while Lindsey scored a run.
"We've been struggling with that for the last couple of games, and today, it really came together for us the way I'd hoped it would," said Hahn.  "Everybody responded well;…up and down the lineup, everybody contributed something."

righthander Jamarr Becks. Becks had a shaky opening inning, yielding a pair of early runs in the top of the first.  But after his teammates got four runs to provide him a lead, the Pirate hurler settled into a comfortable groove, fanning 11 Hazelwood Central hitters over five innings and moving to 4-0 on the season.
"He started out the game a little shaky; he was nervous, and he knew it was a big game," said Hahn.  "After that, he settled down and didn't give up a hit for the next four innings,…really mixed his pitches up, and was really dominant for the rest of the game."
Holding a 4-2 lead, the Pirates pulled away with a six-run rally in the bottom of the third, producing a commanding 10-2 advantage.
The Pirates return to Suburban North play on Monday with a home game against Riverview.
