Hazelwood West Hands Pattonville First Loss

By Paul Kopsky
The Pattonville Pirates saw their perfect record go up in smoke on Monday courtesy of conference rival Hazelwood West.
The Wildcats pounded out 11 hits and took advantage of four Pattonville errors en route to a 10-5 win at Pattonville.
Monday's result creates a first place logjam in the Suburban North Conference with three teams - Hazelwood West, Hazelwood Central and Pattonville - tied for the top spot, each with 4-1 conference marks.
Eric Sansouci, the Wildcats' sophomore leadoff man, was the hitting star going two for three  with a two-run homer and a two-run double.
Hazelwood West wasted little time in jumping on top, plating three runs in the first inning.  Scott Borcherding capped the rally with a solo homer.
Sansouci made it 5-0 West with his two-run shot in the second, and two Pattonville errors helped the Wildcats score two more in the third.  After three, West had a commanding 7-0 lead.
Pattonville got back in the game by erupting for four runs in fourth after two were out.
Greg Coleman had a two-run double and Tyrone Robertson blasted a two-run homer to account for the Pirates' runs.
But West put the game away by scoring three more times in the sixth.  Sansouci topped off his big day by driving home two with a double.
Trailing 10-4 in the seventh, Pattonville's Jim Scott delivered an RBI double, but that was all the

Pirates could muster.
"We were 6-0 coming in and had really played well all year," said Pattonville coach Mark Hahn.
"Defensively, it was disappointing because I know we are better than we played today, but you have to give them credit for taking advantage of the chances we gave them," said Hahn.
West coach Butch Beiter felt confident with ace Mark Craig on the hill.
"Mark Craig is our guy," said Beiter.  "[We knew] if Mark went out there and threw the way he is capable of throwing and we made the plays behind him, it would be a close game.  And offensively we have been swinging the bat really well."
Craig picked up the victory to improve to 4-0;  Rick McGee, who took the loss for Pattonville, fell to
2-1.
