After suffering a 12-2 drubbing at the hands of the Kirkwood Pioneers in game one of Monday's doubleheader, Marquette Mustangs' coach Bob Swift was more than happy to pull off the split by winning game two, 3-1.
   "[It's] unbelievable," said Swift.
"Baseball is a such a weird game.  I
mean, to think that we get hammered in the first game and then my pitchers come out and hold Kirkwood to three hits in the second game."
Kirkwood pounded out 13 hits in the game one victory.  The Pioneers exploded for six runs in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach.  Dan Brown's bases loaded triple highlighted the inning.
But game two was a different story.
Joe Swingle belted a leadoff home run - his third of the season - to get the Mustangs off and running.
Kirkwood evened the score with a run in the third, and the score remained tied at 1-1 until the sixth.
Senior Ryan Olish, making his first start of the season, delivered a two-run single to give the Mustangs a 3-1 lead.
"He [Olish] got in the lineup mainly because he just deserves it," said Swift.

"He just practices hard every day, and so I just decided to give him a shot to play.  And he swings the bat well."
Kirkwood and Marquette remain in a dogfight for the top spot in the Suburban West Conference.  After Monday's split, Kirkwood remains atop the conference with a 6-2 mark, with Marquette now sitting at 6-4 in the conference.
