Parkway South Comes Out Flying, Tops Lindbergh, 6-4, In Sectional

By Curtis Duncan
Parkway South was one area team that most did not expect to be a factor in the Missouri large school baseball playoffs.  At this point, the Patriots are not only a factor, but one of the hottest teams in the postseason.  Andrew Donovan singled and Josh Ward tripled in the bottom of first inning, sparking a five-run rally as Parkway South slipped past Lindbergh, 6-4, in a Missouri Class 4A sectional game at Lindbergh High on Thursday.
Parkway South, who won eight of its last nine games, improved to 20-9 and will take on Eureka in a quarterfinal contest on Saturday.  It will be the Patriots' first quarterfinal appearance in school history.
"The kids came ready to play, and that showed in the first inning where we scored five runs," said Parkway South coach Fred McConnell.  "We had five hits and hit the ball really hard all over the yard, and they were really playing well."
Hitting was crucial for the Patriots, but steady pitching was just as equally big for South.  Junior pitcher Ryan Carolan went the distance.  Although he encountered occasional rough spots, he was very effective when needed, picking up his fourth win of the season.  Carolan (4-4) allowed three earned runs and scattered seven hits.
"He was good when he had to be," said McConnell.  "He was kind of in and out of trouble and on a tightrope there and made some big pitches in clutch situations."
Lindbergh (13-9) managed to get on the board first with a run in the top of the first inning, going up, 1-0.  South quickly erased that deficit with a big scoring surge in the bottom of the first. Donovan singled home two runs, Ward

tripled in a pair of runs, and Tony Seaborn singled in a run, giving the Patriots a 5-1 cushion.
Thanks to single runs in the second, fourth, and fifth innings, the Flyers crept back into it at 5-4 after frame number five.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Patriots picked up some insurance with another run.  Ward led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice, and then scored on an RBI-single by Dominic Scoles for a 6-4 margin.
Few people expected the Patriots to be this deep in the postseason, but they are still playing. Next up will be a quarterfinal clash with Suburban South counterpart Eureka that will serve as the rubber game of the season between the clubs.
The teams split the two games that were played during the regular season; Eureka won, 5-3, on April 12, and Parkway South prevailed, 18-5, on May 3.
"They know us, and we know them," said McConnell.  "We've played against each other twice and split in those two games, so this should be the rubber match;…it should be a pretty tough game, I'm sure."
