McCluer Slips Past Hazelwood West

By Curtis Duncan
Wins have been hard to come by for the McCluer baseball team this spring, but when the Comets come out on top, it usually happens against a quality opponent.  The Comets scored three runs early and three runs late on their way to a 6-4 upset of Suburban North rival Hazelwood West at McCluer High School on Thursday.
McCluer, which defeated Hazelwood East, 7-6, on Wednesday, improved to 3-7 (3-4 in the Suburban North Conference).  Hazelwood West, ranked ninth in the Post-Dispatch large school poll, slipped to 7-3 (3-3 in the conference).
"I think it was a matter of time before we started to put things together,…get a little momentum, …get some good starting pitching, [and] swing the bats a little bit," said McCluer coach Chris Greiner.  "We were fortunate enough to get a couple of wins."
Hazelwood West grabbed the early lead with a run in the top of the second inning, going up, 1-0.  That lead evaporated quickly, though, as McCluer responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame for a 2-1 edge.
A run in the bottom of the second pushed the lead to 3-1, but the Wildcats erased that deficit with three runs in the top of the fourth, pulling

ahead 4-3.
But the Comets had one more rally left in them, as McCluer pushed two runs across the plate for a 5-4 lead.  The Comets added an insurance run for good measure in the bottom of the fifth.
Steve Maher took care of the pitching duties for McCluer; Maher went the distance, striking out nine West batters and walking one to gain the victory.
"Steve Maher pitched a great game for us," said Greiner.  "He really competed for us on the mound,…gave us the opportunity to keep the opposition on their heels a little bit, and we were able to score a couple of runs."
James Karn was charged with the loss for the Wildcats.
Tyke Parrish led the Wildcats' hitting with two hits and three RBIs.
