By Curtis Duncan Wins have been hard to come by for the McCluer baseball team this spring, but when the Comets come out on top, it usually happens against a quality opponent. The Comets scored three runs early and three runs late on their way to a 6-4 upset of Suburban North rival Hazelwood West at McCluer High School on Thursday. McCluer, which defeated Hazelwood East, 7-6, on Wednesday, improved to 3-7 (3-4 in the Suburban North Conference). Hazelwood West, ranked ninth in the Post-Dispatch large school poll, slipped to 7-3 (3-3 in the conference). "I think it was a matter of time before we started to put things together,…get a little momentum, …get some good starting pitching, [and] swing the bats a little bit," said McCluer coach Chris Greiner. "We were fortunate enough to get a couple of wins." Hazelwood West grabbed the early lead with a run in the top of the second inning, going up, 1-0. That lead evaporated quickly, though, as McCluer responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame for a 2-1 edge.
