Chargers Overcome Defensive Woes To Capture District Title

By Paul Kopsky

"When you tell somebody you won, 6-3, and you had seven errors, I think you know you had to have some offense," said Cor Jesu Chargers' softball coach Marianne Haberstroh following the Chargers' sloppy performance in their 6-3 district championship win Monday at Lindbergh.
The Chargers' defense was at best shaky but not shaky enough to do them in.
"We struggled defensively but never enough that we got excited about making the mistakes…We would come right back and get the job done as far as making outs in the
inning.  And I think that is key."
Katy Mueller's two-run double put the Chargers on top, 2-0, in the second inning.
After Parkway South cut the lead in half with a single run in the fourth, the Chargers put together a four-run rally in the fifth.  The key hits in the inning were an Alana Beseau two-run double and Amanda Clifton's RBI single.  Charger errors led to two South runs in the sixth.
Cor Jesu pitcher Melissa Vanvelkinburgh was able to overcome her teammates' defensive woes.  She gave up

three Parkway South runs, but all three were unearned.
"I felt Melissa did a nice job, said Haberstroh.  "She only gave up three hits in the game, and I just think that she kept us battling in there the whole time."
With sectionals looming on Thursday, coach Haberstroh has the Chargers living by the motto that they have followed all season.
"You have to go out there and try to win inning by inning and not worry about any other game that is ahead.  You've gotta play the game that you're in and win each inning."
The Chargers take on the winner of the Ursuline-Nerinx game in Thursday's sectional.
