Cor Jesu Charges Into District Play

By Drew Domjan
At this moment, the Cor Jesu Chargers' softball players can shout, accurately, "We're number one!"  Cor Jesu eased past Ursuline in a 7-0 shutout Thursday.  Melissa Vanvelkinburgh allowed no hits in three and two-thirds innings to notch the win.   With the victory, Cor Jesu takes the MWAA conference title for the second straight year.  Coupled with the Chargers' victory over state champion Rockwood Summit on September 23, there has been no stopping the team in its quest for the conference title.
"The first goal we set in this season was to try to win our conference, and we had to win this ballgame to do that," said Cor Jesu coach Marianne Haberstroh.   "…This group…has left a legacy here for someone to try to beat."
This Cor Jesu legacy includes a 21-3 season record in addition to being undefeated in its conference.
For Cor Jesu's four seniors, the win coincided conveniently with the school's Senior Day.
According to Haberstroh, the team will feel the seniors' absence next year.

"The four seniors have been the inspiration to this team all season," Haberstroh said.  "It's going  to be a real hard loss, to lose people who have been not just ballplayers;…the leadership and the spirit they've brought to this program has just been tremendous."
Cor Jesu advances to the District 5 semifinals at Lindbergh Saturday.  Game time is 12:30.
