Eureka Dethrones Defending State Champ Summit

By Paul Kopsky

The third time was a charm for the Eureka Wildcats in their quest to beat last year's state champions, the Summit Falcons.
The Wildcats suffered their only two losses of the season at the hands of the Falcons but avenged those setbacks with a 1-0 victory in a district championship game Saturday at Eureka.

"I couldn't be any more pleased,"  said Eureka head coach Brad Wallach.  "We played extremely well defensively…[It was an] error-free game.  We had several kids make big plays on defense to take hits away, and the pitching got better as the game went on."
Eureka scored the game's only run in the fifth inning.  Anne Marie Woebel led off the inning with a single.  Sarah Bill attempted to sacrifice and wound up safe at first when Summit failed to get the force on Woebel at second.  The number nine hitter, Jen Smith, then delivered a run-scoring single to right, giving Eureka a 1-0 lead.
Wallach wasn't surprised to see Smith come up big.
"We expect that out of her," Wallach

said.  "She's batting number nine because she's an extra leadoff [hitter].  She's got good speed, so we like to have her coming up with our top of the order coming up."
Eureka thwarted Summit's bid to take a first inning lead when left fielder Jo Ellen Sharp gunned down Lindsay
Brockmeier, who was trying to score on a Tricia Oberhaus single.
The Wildcats advance to sectional play on Thursday when they take on the winner of the Marquette and Lafayette district championship game.
