Too Close For Comfort
Summit Survives Scare From Affton

By Paul Kopsky

The bottom line is, Summit beat Affton, 3-2, and remains undefeated at 15-0.  But it was too close for comfort for Summit coach Doug Robinson.
"We are playing a lot of those games that are too close for comfort," said Robinson.  "I think sometimes we pick and choose who we want to play against, and that's not good.  I'm trying to relay that message to the girls."
For coach Erica Meyer and the girls from Affton, it was a moral victory.
"The fact that they stayed in it the whole time...they were still pretty excited and felt like it was a good game," Meyer said.
The game was scoreless until the sixth when Summit finally broke through against Affton's Jenny Lanser who was making just her second pitching appearance of the season.
Katie Jordan tripled to lead off the Summit sixth.  Christa Hale then delivered a sacrifice fly to put Summit on top, 1-0.
Later in the inning, Abby Barnes singled home Allison Stolzenbach to give Summit a 2-0 lead.
But Affton came right back to tie it in the bottom of the sixth.  The Cougars loaded the bases with one out, and Amanda Kostecki singled in a run to make it a 2-1 game.   With the sacks still jammed, Kacie Flinn walked Maggie Regh, and the game was tied, 2-2.
Tricia Oberhaus led off the Summit

seventh with a single.  And after a successful sacrifice bunt by Lindsay Brockmeier, Jordan came through with a single to score Oberhaus and give Summit a 3-2 lead.
"I think we just battled back and really started focusing on what we needed to do," said Robinson.
Summit, top-ranked in this week's Stats Online poll, hosts Webster Groves on Friday.  Affton (5-9) hosts Nerinx Hall Thursday at the Affton Athletic Association.
