Rice To The Rescue
Lancers' Number One Pitcher Beats Webster In Relief

By Paul Kopsky

What was supposed to be a day off for Lutheran South's ace pitcher Jenny Rice on Monday turned into 6 2/3 innings of relief, 10 strikeouts, and her 16th victory of the season.
Rice turned out to be the Lancers' savior in a 5-2 come-from-behind win over the Webster Groves Stateswomen.
"With having three games this week and districts on Saturday, we were gonna give [Kamin] Hawkins a start," said Lutheran South coach Linda McQueen, referring to her number two starter.
The Stateswomen took a 2-0 lead in the second and loaded the bases with one out in the third.  That's when Rice came to the rescue.  She got out of the third inning jam unscathed and pitched scoreless ball the rest of the way.
The Lancers rallied with two in the sixth to tie the game.  Cory Scanlon walked to lead off the inning.  Rice then singled, and Scanlon wound up scoring on a wild pitch.  Speedy Pam Younglove beat out an infield grounder and drove in the tying run on the play.
The score remained tied, 2-2, until the ninth when the Lancers plated three runs.  Joy Puricelli doubled to score

Younglove, who had led off the inning with a single.  A Webster Groves error allowed another run to score, and Kim Ehrhardt came through with a run-scoring single to give the Lancers their 5-2 lead.
The Lancers are right back at it on Tuesday when they play district foe Affton at the Affton Athletic Association.  Thursday, the Lancers have a Metro Women's Athletic Association game against Incarnate Word.  And on Saturday, South meets the winner of the Kennedy-St. John's game in a district semifinal game.
