Marquette Outlasts Lafayette

By Paul Kopsky

The Marquette Mustangs continue to amaze coach Laura Blechle with their level of success this season.  With Monday's 2-1 nine-inning win over Lafayette in a district championship game, the Mustangs are still very much alive in the hunt for a state title.
"I thought this was going to be a .500 season, but it turned out to be an 18-9 season," said Blechle.  "Not only were they conference champs--that was a big goal for us--[but] being district champs is just icing on the cake.  So anything after this is just wonderful for us."
In Monday's game, Katy Hejlek's run-scoring double in the second inning gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. Lafayette tied the game in the fourth, and the game remained tied, 1-1, until the ninth.
The Mustangs put runners at first and third with one out for Chrissy Jacoby, who singled in the game- winning run.
Marquette now gets set to face Eureka in Thursday's sectional at

Lafayette.  Eureka defeated Marquette, 4-3, way back on August 28, but Blechle believes it is a different Marquette team that will take the field on Thursday.
"We have a lot of inexperienced players this year," Blechle said.  "We are very, very young.  We have worked real hard and come together."
