The Lutheran South Lancers have gone to the state tournament three of the last four years, and all three times they have taken home the third place trophy.  Saturday, the Lancers defeated Kansas City O'Hara, 1-0, in this year's third place game.
'"Yesterday was a big disappointment," pitcher Jenny Rice said of the Lancers' semifinal loss to Incarnate Word.  "We didn't even think we would make it this far.  We had nothing to lose so [we said] let's go out and win this one."
The senior right hander finished her Lutheran South career in style, tossing a one-hit shutout and fanning 12 along the way.
Rice was also right in the middle of the Lancers fifth inning rally.  Singles by Rice and Megan Gates, and a sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third with one out.  Kim Ehrhardt then layed down a bunt which O'Hara first baseman Laura Shiver fielded.  But Shiver failed make the tag on Ehrhardt coming down the line, and

Gates came home to score the game's only run.
The Lancers finished with a 26-5 record.
"We had an outstanding season," said Lutheran South head coach Linda McQueen  "And to come back and win the third place game was a big win because we wanted to finish strong."
